"To be hanged and drowned" he thought, "that is not so bad; but I do not wish to be shot. No; I will not be shot; that is not fair." (chapter 3) We read an Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge this morning as a group. After the story, we talked about execution. As a family we discussed our personal preference of execution for ourselves. I personally, unlike Mr. Fahrquhar, would rather be shot. I don't want to suffer, I would rather die instantly. I don't understand why Mr. Fahrquhar would prefer not to be shot or why he thinks that would be unfair. Let me know what your thoughts are on this.
I think it was a little bit of both. I think Fahrquhar wanted to help the war effort, and since he was not enlisted he believed this could be his way of doing so. But also, I think he wanted to attain glory and fame for himself.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was his pride/own glory. I think that if Fahrquhar had thought about what the soldier had said, he would've realized it was a trap. I think that his pride blinded him.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I believe his pride was showing through once again, and he was being selfish.
DeleteThat's an interesting point of view Amber! I wonder why he didn't enlist if he really wanted to make a difference?
ReplyDeleteMaybe he thought if he enlisted then he would have to share the praise with the other soldiers. But if he did it solo then he would get the all the attention.
DeleteI agree with Amber it seem as if its a little bit of both, he wanted everyone to see him as a hero he wanted to be praised. But he also wanted to feel as if he was apart of the war so he thought he was helping them when he tried to sabotage the bridge.
